L’association Martinets Sans Frontières est heureuse d’annoncer que la Journée mondiale des martinets a un nouveau parrain : Sir Brian May !

2019-2025 : Dr Jane Goodall

Depuis la première édition en 2019, le Dr Jane Goodall, DBE, était la marraine enthousiaste de la Journée mondiale des martinets, encourageant la sensibilisation et l’action à l’échelle mondiale. L’éthologue et militante écologiste britannique, fondatrice de l’Institut Jane Goodall et Messagère de la paix des Nations Unies, est décédée le 1er octobre 2025 à l’âge de 91 ans.

Depuis 2012, Jane soutenait également la conservation des martinets au sein du réseau mondial des Instituts Jane Goodall et de son programme « Roots & Shoots ». Aujourd’hui, le réseau « Roots & Shoots » compte des milliers de membres dans plus de 75 pays.

2026 : Sir Brian May

Sir Brian May, CBE, PhD, FRAS, est surtout connu comme membre fondateur du groupe de rock britannique emblématique Queen, guitariste, compositeur, producteur et interprète de renommée mondiale. Mais il est aussi docteur en astrophysique, expert en photographie stéréoscopique 3D et défenseur des droits des animaux, notamment à travers son association caritative, Save Me Trust. De plus, il est membre du Conseil pour l'espoir de la Fondation Jane Goodall.

Lien avec les martinets

L'association Save Me Trust milite pour la protection de la faune sauvage britannique, en particulier pour la conservation des martinets. Elle promeut la protection de leur habitat et sensibilise le public à ces oiseaux, qui reviennent au Royaume-Uni dès avril pour élever leurs petits. L'association met souvent en avant l'arrivée des martinets en avril, les célébrant comme un élément essentiel de l'été britannique. Elle milite pour la protection de leurs habitats et la sensibilisation au déclin dramatique de leur population.

L'Institut Jane Goodall soutient le WSD depuis sa création, en contribuant à la diffusion des messages vidéo du Dr Jane Goodall et en organisant parfois des événements le 7 juin. En Belgique, l'équipe Roots&Shoots propose même des ateliers sur les martinets tout au long de l'année.

Journée mondiale des martinets 2026

Pour célébrer la 8e édition de la Journée mondiale des martinets, le 7 juin, un message vidéo de Sir Brian May sera publié sur le site web de l'événement et sur les réseaux sociaux de Martinets Sans Frontières. Il sera également diffusé au sein du réseau du JGI.

Citation de Sir Brian May : « Je préférerais qu'on se souvienne de moi pour avoir sauvé les animaux. Après ma mort, on se souviendra sans doute de moi pour Queen, mais je préférerais de loin qu'on se souvienne de moi pour avoir tenté de changer notre façon de traiter les autres êtres vivants. »

A propos de la Journée mondiale des martinets

La Journée mondiale des martinets s’est initialement inspirée d’autres journées mondiales, comme la Journée mondiale du moineau, puis la Journée mondiale du chimpanzé. La date du 7 juin a été choisie comme un compromis idéal entre les deux hémisphères et toutes les espèces de martinets du monde.

Aujourd’hui, elle est célébrée dans plus de 50 pays, sur tous les continents, et concerne une quarantaine d’espèces différentes.

L’association Save Me Trust

Fondée par le Dr Brian May et Anne Brummer, cette organisation de protection animale œuvre activement à la protection des animaux sauvages par le biais de campagnes de sensibilisation, de lobbying et de modifications législatives. Elle se spécialise dans la collaboration avec des experts, en travaillant sur le terrain pour trouver des solutions durables et efficaces, fondées sur la science et le bon sens.

La Fondation Jane Goodall Legacy (JGLF)

La JGLF a été créée en juin 2017 par le Dr Jane Goodall, DBE. La Fondation Jane Goodall Legacy (JGLF) a pour mission de constituer, d'investir et de gérer un fonds de dotation destiné à soutenir les programmes de l'Institut Jane Goodall, notamment Roots & Shoots. Jane souhaitait que les futurs versements de ce fonds financent des programmes de conservation, de recherche et d'éducation au sein de la communauté Jane Goodall. www.janeslegacy.com

Le Conseil pour l'espoir de la Fondation Jane Goodall Legacy est composé de personnalités influentes et respectées issues des domaines de la conservation, des sciences, des affaires, des pouvoirs publics, des médias et des arts. Swifts Without Frontiers is pleased to announce that World Swift Day has a new Patron:
Sir Brian May!

2019-2025: Dr Jane Goodall

Since the first edition back in 2019, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE had been the enthusiastic patron for World Swift Day, encouraging global awareness and action. The British born ethologist and conservationist, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace, died on October 1st, 2025, aged 91.

Since 2012, Jane had also been supporting Swift conservation within the global network of Jane Goodall Institutes and her Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme. Today, the Roots & Shoots network has blossomed into thousands of members in more than 75 countries.

2026: Sir Brian May

Sir Brian May, CBE, PhD, FRAS is mostly known as a founding member of the iconic British rock band Queen, world-renowned guitarist, songwriter, producer and performer. But he is also a Doctor of Astrophysics, 3-D stereoscopic photographic authority and advocate for animal rights, through his charity, the Save Me Trust. Moreover, he is a member of the Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation ‘s Council for Hope.
 

Link with Swifts

The Save Me Trust campaigns for the protection of UK wildlife, including highlighting the conservation needs of Swifts. It promotes habitat protection and encourages awareness of these birds, which return to the UK from April to raise chicks. The Trust often highlights the arrival of Swifts in April, celebrating them as a crucial part of UK summer. Itadvocates for protecting Swift habitats and raising awareness about the dramatic decline in their population.

The Jane Goodall Institute has been supporting WSD from day one, helping spread Dr Jane Goodall’s video messages and sometimes organizing events on June 7. In Belgium, the Roots&Shoots team even offers workshops on Swifts all year round.

World Swift Day 2026

To mark this 8^th edition of World Swift Day, on June 7, a video message by Sir Brian May will be published on the website of World Swift Day and on the social media of Swifts Without Frontiers. It will also be shared within the JGI network.

Says Sir Brian May: “I’d rather be remembered for saving animals. When I’m gone, people will no doubt remember me for Queen, but I would much rather be remembered for attempting to change the way we treat our fellow creatures”.

About World Swift Day
The World Swift Day (WSD) was created in January 2019 by Swifts Without Frontiers.
Every year since then, it has been celebrated around the globe, on June 7… even during “the COVID years”. Since day 1, Dr. Jane Goodall has been an enthusiastic Patron, each and every year!

Swifts Without Frontiers invites all NGO’s, municipalities, individuals, companies, schools and any collectivity caring for Swifts to celebrate that day by communicating about Swifts (whichever species) and by organizing events.

WSD was initially inspired by other World Days like the World Sparrow Day, then by the World Chimpanzee Day. The date of June 7 was chosen as the best “compromise date” between both hemispheres and all the different Swift species of the world.

Meanwhile, it has been celebrated in more than 50 countries, on all continents, covering about 40 different species.

The Save Me Trust
Founded by Dr. Brian May and Anne Brummer, this animal welfare organisation exists to proactively protect wild animals through campaigning, lobbying and changing laws. They specialise in collaborating with experts by working on the ground to find effective sustainable solutions based on science and common sense.

The Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation (JGLF)

The intent of JGLF is to build, invest, and manage an endowment to support programmes of the Jane Goodall Institute, including Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots.
